چکیده
We present some results of numerical simulations of a globular cluster orbiting in the central region of a triaxial galaxy on a set of 'loop' orbits. Tails start forming after about a quarter of the globular cluster orbital period and develop, in most cases, along the cluster orbit, showing clumpy substructures as observed, for example, in Palomar 5. If completely detectable, clumps can contain about 7000M ⊙ each, i.e. about 10% of the cluster mass at that epoch. The morphology of tails and clumps and the kinematical properties of stars in the tails are studied and compared with available observational data. Our finding is that the stellar velocity dispersion tends to level off at large radii, in agreement to that found for M15 and ω Centauri.

In addition to the effects of their internal dynamical evolution, globular clusters suffer strong dynamical evolution from the potential well of their host galaxy (Gnedin & Ostriker 1997, Murali & Weinberg 1997). These external forces speed up the internal dynamical evolution of these stellar systems, accelerating their destruction. Shocks are caused by the tidal field of the galaxy: interactio...

In the last decade, observational studies have shown the existence of tidal streams in the outer part of many galactic globular clusters [6, 7]. The most striking examples of clusters with well defined tidal tails are represented by Palomar 5 [9] and NGC 5466 [2] (both observed in the framework of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey), which show structures elongated for 4 kpc and 1 kpc in length, resp...

We discuss recent observational and numerical work on tidal tails in globular clusters. Evidence of tidal tails has now been found in 16 Galactic globulars and 4 globulars in M31. Simulations indicate that mapping of these tidal tails over most of a typical cluster's orbit may be quite feasible. A relatively modest effort in this regard would yield reliable space velocities for those clusters w...
متن کاملTidal Tails around Globular Clusters: Are They a Good Tracer of Cluster Orbits?
We present the results of detailed N-body simulations of clusters moving in a realistic Milky Way (MW) potential. The strong interactionwith the bulge and the disk of the Galaxy leads to the formation of tidal tails, emanating from opposite sides of the cluster. Some characteristic features in the morphology and orientation of these streams are recognized and interpreted. The tails have a compl...
متن کاملEffects of External Tidal Field on the Evolution of Multi-mass Star Clusters
We present N-body simulations of realistic globular clusters containing initial mass function in the galaxy to study effects of tidal field systematically on the properties of outer parts of globular clusters. Using NBODY6 which takes into account the two-body relaxation correctly, we investigate general evolution of globular clusters in galactic tidal field. For simplicity, we have employed on...
